Our Projects.

This community-focused program will be subsided by the production of mushrooms, organic vegetables, wood fuel and homemade food products which will be prepared on site.

Project 1. Mushrooms

We have started the process of growing mushrooms in straw and logs in some of the enclosed areas of the farm outbuildings. Harvested mushrooms will be sold to local restaurants and delis. Some logs will be prepared and sold as gift idea for the home at market stalls and food fayres. The profits from these sales will be put back into the community by developing the other areas of the project.

Project 2. Organic Vegetables

A community focused activity, the vegetables be grown in existing beds with possible expansion. The poly tunnel will be primarily for year round salad. There is a ready supply of well rotted manure already available on site. Community volunteers who help on the site will earn ‘Foodit’ ‘coupons for ever hour of work. This can be exchanged for the produce at harvest time. Surplus food will be preserved on site to be sold locally.

Project 3. Education Space

Provide an indoor and outdoor education space for hosting skill sharing workshops and practical activities to do with permaculture, sustainable development, food growing and the environment. The options are to convert an existing building into a classroom space, purchase a yurt or build an education space using cob/straw bale. This will be made available to local schools and to disadvantaged sectors of society as well as the public at large. Some workshops will be residential which camping space is available, however use of the house would mean that the enterprise could offer a variety of price groupings to meet customer expectations. Washing and cooking facilities will be available to all. Building a compost toilet and washing area would be a potential community activity for the camping area. Shop with food produced on site also available.

Project 4. Tree Plantation

Trees that are suitable for coppicing and as an economical and sustainable source of wood fuel will be planted in some areas of the site at the owners’ discretion. Willow will be grown for basketry and craft purposes and can be used in willow structures. Other areas, hazel and walnuts will be planted as a future, long-term food source.

Project 5. Community Building

The idea behind this project is to build community in the local area of Bonnyrig, Midlothian which will expand outwards. Our project will look to support and collaborate with local businesses and individuals. Activities such as Parent & Toddler Gardening Club, Redtent, Tree Planting, Vounteer days and Cooking Workshops will be run throughout the year.
